Constitution of India (Interesting Facts)

Dear Friends,

We all know something more or less about our constitution. Here, I tried to bring few unheard & interesting facts about our constitution.

1) Constitution of India adopted on 26th November, 1949 but it came into force from 26th January, 1950.

2) Constituent assembly took 2 years,11 months and 18 days to come up with final draft of constitution.

3) It is Lengthiest constitution in the world.  It is five times bigger than constitution of USA and seven times bigger than constitution of France.

4) Originally, it was having 22 parts, 395 articles and 8 schedules. Currently, the constitution of India comprises 25 parts, 470 articles and 12 schedules. It has been amended 104 times so far.

5) Originally, it was written in Hindi in English. It was not typed or printed. It was hand written by Prem Bihari Narain Raizada in a flowing italic style.

6) Original copies of Indian constitution are kept in special helium-filled cases in the library of parliament of India.

7) Indian Constitution is often called a “bag of borrowings”,  because it has borrowed provisions from the constitutions of other countries. For example, the words Liberty, Equality & Fraternity used in our preamble come from French constitution.

8) Preamble of our constitution is inspired by US Constitution. Both the preambles begin with,  “We, the people”.

9) The concepts of Fundamental Duties, Planning Commission in the constitution was borrowed from USSR.(Russia)

10) The laws governing our supreme Court and the concept, “procedure established by law” as mentioned in article 21 were adopted from Japan’s constitution

11) Concept of suspension of fundamental rights during emergency rule was taken from Germany.

12) Father of the Indian Constitution Dr.Ambedkar was ready to burn it,  if it failed to protect minorities.
